Staining Mexican saltillo tile and sealing for long lasting durability.
Your South Florida Trusted Pros for Mexican Tile Services. Mexican tile can be stained to meet your design needs. The porosity of the clay varies in different areas of each tile. Therefore the absorption of any stain will vary. This gives the tiles a natural look, not a look like the color was painted on.
Typically we install the tiles raw or with a penetrating sealer. We then stain the floor using a penetrating stain of a color of your choice. The most common colors range from a dark brown, giving a leathery look, to a white wash (also called pickling). This type of stain does not lay on top of the tile but penetrates the pores for a durable color which resists scratches and wear. We then seal the floor with, typically, four to five coats of sealer. This protects the floor and enhances the color of the stained tile.
We can also stain an existing Mexican tile floor. This process involves first stripping off the existing sealer before applying the color. Even though we remove all the old sealer from the tile, it is still not as porous as it was before it was originally sealed. Therefore we must mix special pigments into the stains, then apply and rub this mixture into the tiles to achieve the desired color. After the stain/pigment mixture has been applied, it must dry for at least a day for it to cure. Then we seal the entire floor with four to five coats of sealer to protect and enhance.
